Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- recognise & apply basic general management skills in the areas of planning, organising, directing & controlling;
- demonstrate familiarity with & application of standard management practices, eg committee meeting procedure, action-planning, evaluation & appraisal systems;
- employ functional concepts & operations in activities such as marketing, finance, personnel, etc.

Syllabus

This is practical experience in setting-up, running & liquidating a business. It is supported by academic staff, experienced business practitioners & a system for planning, financing & operating.

Students establish a Company, organised, staffed & operated by themselves. They decide on products or services to offer, sources of finance, production methods, marketing & work patterns.

Each Company meets as it deems appropriate. A panel of Business Consultants from local organisations is available for advice & comments. There are meetings with the Enterprise Tutor, an academic member of staff, approximately fortnightly. In particular, Companies present their Business Plans before a panel of business people & financiers. At the end of the module, Companies also formally present their Company Reports before a similar panel.

Students have access to the Graduate Enterprise programme supported by the national educational charity, Young Enterprise. Through this they can attain two additional external qualifications, the Graduate Programme Achievers Award and the BTEC National Professional Vocational Award Level 4 in Graduate Enterprise; two Units in Business Start-up and in Business Development.
